Diary of an old cheeser

Hi there! Like other blogs, this is my chance to wax lyrical (some might say talk utter cr*p) about a) what's happening in my life b) all of my pet obsessions in particular music, tv, movies, books and other generally connected things, quite often of the retro, old and "cheesy" variety. Hence the title of my blog. Feel free to leave a comment if the mood takes you. There's nothing like a good chinwag about one's favourite topics and besides I love to meet new people! Cheers, Simon

Jack's back!!

Oooer missus! It's the return of that saucy space Captain, Jack Harkness!

John Barrowman guested on Jonathan Ross' chatshow last Friday night and was his usual cheeky, flirty self. There were also some very amusing shenanigans with supermodel
Janice Dickinson (who Barrowman and Andrew Lloyd Webber both insulted) and at one point Barrowman proffered his bottom to Ms Dickinson! This man likes it all ways.

And to whet our appetites John presented a little "taster" from the forthcoming episode Dr Who
"Utopia" in which he's scheduled to re-join the Dr on his travels. Hoorah! I can't wait. I hope however that he's going to be the jolly, fun-loving self Captain Jack that we saw in Season One rather than the more po-faced, take-myself-too-seriously version we got in the quality-challenged "Torchwood". The clip seems to pick up exactly where Torchwood left off - with Jack abruptly leaving the hub when he hears that all too familiar TARDIS sound! And it all looks very exciting.

Geeky me can't help but raise a few points though:

- The bit when Jack runs toward the TARDIS. If you watch carefully in one shot he's almost right next to the police box, yet in the next shot he does an amazing dive/jump over a fairly large amount of space (in his desperation to catch the dematerialising TARDIS!) This doesn't make sense!

- The Dr clearly sees Jack on his monitor and then operates the controls to dematerialise!! Mmmm! Not very nice, Doc! Why is this?? Does he think Jack will be too much of a liability? Does he still feel guilty about leaving Jack behind before and doesn't want the aggro of having to explain his actions? I hope all is properly explained!

- Jack hanging onto the TARDIS whilst it hurtles through the time/space vortex! Erm, excuse me but is this physically possible? I was also going to add that no living being would be able to breath in this situation. But then, Torchwood viewers will remember that old Jack is now immortal and cannot die! (Remember the episode
"Out of Time" when Jack sits with the guy who asphyxiates on car exhaust fumes, whilst he remains totally unharmed?) I guess this is how they'll explain that one...It's a funny image though. Anyway watch and enjoy! And roll on "Utopia"...

If Jack can't die, what's the point of his character in a drama, as you can never put him in peril?!! There needs to be the possibility of death in order that an audience will worry about him.

Nice to see the clip again but I was weally disappointed when I saw it on "Wossy", especially as it's diwected by Gwaeme Harper! Jack should, at the very least, become unconscious through lack of air regardless of "Out of Time". That's what happened every time he was shot in "Torchwood"! And, how the hell is he holding on to the TARDIS at that velocity?!!

Nice to see Captain Sparrow, er, I mean Captain Jack back... though he runs alarmingly. I think it must be his backpack - it makes him look like a student. No wonder the Doctor hit the gas and tried to escape!

Janice Dickinson is so absurdly horrible she forces me to enjoy her.

She doesn't remind me of my bottom, tho.

Fantastic clip! Glad I popped round courtesy of Dr John who had you as link of the day...

I, too, want to know why The Doctor decides to take flight, even though he sees Jack running towards him. It's not very nice!

You've touched on Jack surviving after clinging on to the TARDIS... A possible explanation might be the same reason The Doctor and Donna did not die when she flung the doors open mid-flight. Sadly, I don't have the answer to that, either. OK, I'm rambling. Sorry.

I think Jack is half Time Lord. Hence he regenerates (sort of). He doesn't change, though. I bet The Doctor will ask him how many times he's died and he'll say, "Twelve."

Timewarden - I agree with that, it does kind of take away Jack's vulnerability and any real element of danger for him and means he can escape lots of difficult situations...fortunate to say the least! (And yet the impression we were getting in Torchwood was that this was more of a curse than a blessing and was doing Jack's head in...)

Isn't the fact that Jack didn't pass out down to bad writing rather than the direction?

Yep as fun and high octane as the clip was, it was very far fetched!!

Steve - Captain Cock-er-ney Sparra? Who he? Yes, and actually Jack must have packed his bag pretty damn quick cos at the end of Torchwood he didn't even have one with him! Sensible boy that he is, he probably packed several pairs of pants and socks to take with him. I hope so anyway.

Matty - I thought she (Janice that is) was weeeeeird. Acted like she was on something anyway.

Alistair - Thank you! Dr John? Is he a blog guru?

Minge - Not very nice indeed! Perhaps the Dr is scared he'll start flirting with Martha, or worse, with him! Maybe this incarnation of the Doc is a gay-phobe! Actually I doubt that but there has to be SOME explanation for him clearing off like that!

When the Dr opened the TARDIS doors with Donna, there was some kind of forcefield protecting them from asphyxiation...but Jack is outside! So he doesn't have that option does he?

Nah hen, he ain't a Time Lord! He's a pansexual space rogue though, almost as good...

Cool Old Cheeser! Oh, yes! Miss Dickinson is quite strange! You should check out her TV show! ...like a train wreck in need of laugh track.

I'd love to get shafted by Captain Jack. Would you?

Matty - What a hilarious analogy. Don't know if her TV show gets shown on terrestrial, but sounds intriguing nevertheless.

Minge - Oh honestly! We've had this conversation before! I mean, we even set up our Torchwood: Hardcore petition and that came to nothing! God damn it! Does the public have NO taste?
