Diary of an old cheeser

Hi there! Like other blogs, this is my chance to wax lyrical (some might say talk utter cr*p) about a) what's happening in my life b) all of my pet obsessions in particular music, tv, movies, books and other generally connected things, quite often of the retro, old and "cheesy" variety. Hence the title of my blog. Feel free to leave a comment if the mood takes you. There's nothing like a good chinwag about one's favourite topics and besides I love to meet new people! Cheers, Simon

Ahaaaaa....

Perhaps herein lies the answer ... just seen this posted on Outpost Gallifrey today, a story from the super, soaraway Sun ...

Doctor Who legend Peter Davison is to step back into the Tardis – and come face to face with the current Doctor.

Peter, 56, who played the Timelord in the 1980s, will pull on his famous trenchcoat once again for a Children In Need special.

Bosses are tight-lipped about the storyline, written by Who scribe Stephen Moffat.

But an insider revealed: “The Doctor is forever travelling through time so there’s no reason why he couldn't catch up with a former incarnation.

“Peter was top of the writer’s list to make a comeback."

This year’s Children In Need charity telethon takes place on BBC1 on Friday, November 16.

Let's see what they come up with, eh?

Have to disagree with both you and Steve about Peter being too old to play the Doctor! He's just a little older than Hartnell was, when he started playing the role in 1963, so you could argue he's now just the right age to start playing the part! As it is, Davison's only reprising his most famous character for a skit, if the story is true, which it probably is, and not even a full episode.

Good news that the CiN "Special" is being written by Steven Moffat, though, and not that Ruddy Timewarped Delinquent who usually writes all the "important" episodes! Perhaps the fifth Doctor's companion will be Sally Sparrow!! Swoon!!!

Joan is 74 and not a stranger to SF having appeared in terrific episodes of both "Space: 1999" and the original "Star Trek" but you can see where they're going with this. No doubt, by the end of her episode, she'll have regenerated into a younger model who beats up her husband 'cos that Raving Transcendental Dunderhead can't think of anything better for her to do!

Well hello Timewarden! You have regenerated!! Well...almost. Glad you are still with us anyway.

Yes if it's only a short piece for Children in Need it might be okay after all. And with Stephen M writing it we might actually get a decent script! I am loving your new RTD names - very funny! We can only wish that Ms Sparrow will make a return. We'll probably get Sarah Sutton or Janet Fielding instead!

Mmmm. It's not that PD is now incapable of playing the Dr role - far from it, as all those audio dramas attest - my point is that he just looks too old now to convince - how are we meant to believe this is the same youthful Dr of the 1980s?

Yes, I actually made that comment about Joan's other sci-fi credentials on my other post - fair enough - but like you I still think casting her is a bad move. In her heyday, Kate O'Mara managed to pull it off and I enjoyed her turn as the Rani, especially in her first outing. Talking of which, if they can cast someone as ancient as Joan, why can't they bring back Ms O'Mara instead?

Don't mean to be ageist but I was thinking the exact same thing as Old Cheeser... if The Rani's coming back (and I sooooo hope she is), they should cast Kate O'Mara again in the role if they're going to cast someone as old as that. I'm all for her regenerating into a younger model, though. Wasn't that bird in Footballers Wives mentioned at one point?

Newplanet - precisely. Joan is practically dead - why not bring back Kate again?

Perhaps the Dr could materialise on a North Sea ferry to witness the Rani sunbathing topless in the middle of a Force 10 gale?

You're right, it was Zoe Lucker who was rumoured to be the new Randi, I mean Rani. That all went tits up though. Rather ironic as Joan and Zoe actually slugged it out as two bitchy rivals in "Footballer's Wives". I think Ms Lucker is a tad too tacky to feature in DW, mind.

OOH, am jealous of how far ahead you lot are in this!! We have just had the starting of the episode with the Runaway bride way down here. My youngest wanted to know if the series is "action-packed" (I told her I have been shamelessly cheating by reading these blogs!). I said yes. She wasn't disappointed.

I look forward to Kylie Minogue's appearance in the Christmas special, although I think Catherine Tate will prove a worthy everyday assistant.

What I object to is the Dr Who overkill. (why DO channels insist on killing their golden geese thus, these days?) If they still left us the anticipation of each programme without all the 'behind the scenes' cobblers in between let we forget about it in the week between broadcasts, I'd be a much happier bunny. And the whole point of Dr Who was NOT knowing every last behind-the-scenes secret - where is the mystique in that?

I do approve of David Tennant however. Have admired him ever since his first major role in 'Takin' Over the Asylum'. There was always something about him that marked him out for great things! Star quality I suppose. Ok and he's kinda cute in an offbeat way as well! But more importantly than that he's got that rare actorly trait these days - *character*, though I wish he hadn't gone overboard with the bleached white teeth (to the point they actually look a bit false now!), frankly.

Sagi - Well you are only one series behind, so that's not too bad! Yes I think the new version is probably more action-packed than the original which perhaps was more "talky" - again to do with people's attention spans in general.

Matty - I can just see you travelling through time and space with B as your hot companion! You'd be too tempted to slip off into the TARDIS bedroom though wouldn't you, instead of exploring some alien planet ... Okay, enough rudeness!

Laura - Thanks for dropping by! Unlike you I've had my reservations about Ms Tate - personally I think she was a bit of a one-trick pony but will reserve judgement until seeing her in the next series.

I don't know if I agree with your comments about the overkill. When we do get the "behind the scenes" stuff e.g. the Confidentials, it tends to be AFTER the episode has been broadcast, so surely that doesn't blow the gaff too much? Unless you're referring to trailers as well?

David Tennant has grown on me, but I'm not as big as fan as you! I find a lot of his mannerisms and tics as the Dr kind of irritating - when he plays it more "straight" he's actually a lot more bearable! In hindsight I think Christopher Eccleston was a lot better. Not that I think DT is a terrible actor - it's partly to do with the writing and RTD can be blamed for that... I did think DT was very good in "Recovery" (drama with Sarah Parrish) and I confess I haven't seen him in many other things, so he's probably very good elsewhere! Is he a chain smoker or something then, hence the need to bleach his teef??

    Rumours, rumours, rumours...

    That Rani? Again? Zzz....

Another old person with a fob watch that changed them from a TimePerson (I am not sexist) to a puny human? What are the chances of that? Again?

    No thanks.
