Diary of an old cheeser

Hi there! Like other blogs, this is my chance to wax lyrical (some might say talk utter cr*p) about a) what's happening in my life b) all of my pet obsessions in particular music, tv, movies, books and other generally connected things, quite often of the retro, old and "cheesy" variety. Hence the title of my blog. Feel free to leave a comment if the mood takes you. There's nothing like a good chinwag about one's favourite topics and besides I love to meet new people! Cheers, Simon

Ta Ta ,Timewarden...

Timewarden is leaving us. Again. He's just announced he's closing down his blog. AGAIN. Nooooo!!!

He left us once. Then thankfully he regenerated (an appropriate anaology) and gave us more wonderfully researched, passionate posts that showcased his encylopediac knowledge of TV, film and music.

One of Tim's major passions is Dr Who - hence our mutual interest - although unlike me, he's been seriously unimpressed with the new, resurrected DW brought to us by Russell T Davies since 2005 (although my regular readers might know that I too have been harbouring growing doubts about the judgement of the Welshman and his effect on the future of the sci-fi prog. I'm getting more cynical by the hour...) Anyway despite our diametrically opposed views, Tim and I shared some passionate debates about DW which I really enjoyed and it was great exchanging opinions.

So I'm very sad to see him go. I hope he visits me here from time to time. And I've promised that I would write a post on Space:1999 (one of his favourite progs, pic above) for some time ... I will, one day, promise ...

Bye bye, Tim and good luck. Can't we persuade you to regenerate again? After all the Dr has done it numerous times, hasn't he?

    Thank you, Simon.

I love the Eagle picture and am still looking forward to reading your "Space: 1999" post! Have you finished working your way through the second series yet? If so, did you spot a much younger Roy Marsden, Doctor Stoker from "Smith and Jones", in the infamous episode "Devil's Planet"?!!

I've yet to catch the Patrick Troughton episode "The Dorcons", on ITV4, as I missed it last time it was shown. It's kinda rare 'cos it wasn't originally shown until 1978, way after most episodes had been transmitted.

I must admit to becoming more and more cynical since "Doctor Who" returned and it's quite a negative way to feel about something, one of the reasons I want to stop writing about it, for now, and just let it wash over me!

I agree. TimeWarden will be sadly missed by me too.

Oh, I hope Timewarden comes back!

Tho, I don't know much about Doctor Who or Space 1999 --- it is always interesting to learn about new loves and passions.

    I find it inspiring.

...there must be ideas still left unexamined! ...this seems to be the truth of what i've seen of sci-fi -- it seems limitless in terms of creativity.

I really think it exceeds my mental capacity to keep up!

Hi Tim - You're welcome. Yes, I might get the post written by, erm...2999! Only one milennium after the date of the show itself. One hopes not!

I haven't watched that episode you mentioned yet, but I look forward to it, albeit in a tacky way - the women rulers with whips etc. Kinky!

I HAVE seen "The Dorcons" though, and I actually really enjoyed it. It does smack of "last one in the season therefore we've run out of money" but is entertaining nevertheless. Patrick T is good if underused and there is an excellent performance from Ann Firbank as the evil Consul Varda.

I can understand that if you feel largely negative about something it becomes a waste of time writing about it. I too have not been backwards in coming forwards when expressing my views on "New Who" and worried that my relentless criticisms have grated on my readers! Oh well, I do have an open mind and to date I have largely enjoyed the first three seasons of the relaunched DW, unlike yourself, sadly!

Steve - Indeed!! I don't know, I have a feeling that regeneration is imminent...

Matty - But you have watched some DW now though, haven't you? Is B still a fan?

You're right, sci-fi has endless scope, certainly a show like DW where they can travel to any place or time - part of the wonder of the whole thing!

You know, we got the 70's version of Dr. Who but I think I annoyed B with all of my questions. lol!

He does not care for the current Dr. Who -- or at least the series from the beginning of that series.

Tho, I do think the current Dr. W is quite hot. B did not agree on that score, tho.

I am most curious about Torchwood and a friend told me it is a US series. LOL! I thought it was in the UK only!

I know music and movies, but unless Dawn French or Jennifer Saunders is involved I'm a bit lost when it comes to TV.

    (sigh)

There's a rumour Jennifer Saunders might be playing the Doctor, sometime in the future! Expect it's nothing more than a rumour, though!!

There's another rumour saying there's to be a "Four Doctors" 45th Anniversary Special (starring McCoy, McGann, Eccleston and Tennant) in November, written by (Sir) Terrance (of) Dicks, no less! Exceedingly unlikely!!

And, I'm with B on which "Doctor Who" is worth watching! Give me the '70s over the present, any day!!

OOOOOO, if Jennifer Saunders were to step into the Doctor's shoes I'd have to fly to the UK to see it!

We just watched a sort of sci-fi film called, THE NINES, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Hope Davis.

    Have you seen it?
